Gold prices fell as much as 1.5 percent toward $4,020 an ounce after a strong US nonfarm payrolls report led traders to expect the Federal Reserve will raise interest rates to control inflation.

Market Factors

Bullion dropped as traders also looked at diplomatic efforts to end the conflict in the Middle East alongside sharp losses in artificial intelligence stocks that hurt risk appetite. Traders have largely priced in a Federal Reserve rate hike in December because stubbornly high energy prices make it hard to bring down inflation. Higher interest rates are a challenge for gold since the metal does not pay interest. Spot gold fell 0.8 percent to $4,055.42 an ounce at 12:40 p.m. in New York. Silver dipped 0.03 percent to $51.76, platinum rose, and palladium dropped, while the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index rose 0.4 percent. The precious metal had previously jumped nearly 4 percent on Wednesday due to midterm election results.

Analyst Forecasts

Goldman Sachs Group Inc. analysts wrote in a note that rising interest rates, uncertain energy prices, and inflation volatility make it hard for fast money funds to keep long positions in gold. The analysts cut their year-end forecast for gold from $4,650 an ounce to $4,150 an ounce. However, they noted that the current price correction may offer a better entry point for long-term investors betting on central bank gold accumulation or protection against macro policy risks. Yihui Xie and Yvonne Yue Li assisted with the report.

Context

Central banks often buy gold as a safe store of value during times of global economic uncertainty and high inflation. When the US central bank raises interest rates, investors often shift their money toward cash or bonds that offer regular payouts instead of holding gold.
