New Zealand fast bowler Blair Tickner is confident his team will bounce back in the second ODI against India after losing the series opener in Auckland. India took a one-nil lead in the three-match series with a five-wicket win on Wednesday. New Zealand was bowled out for 185 runs in the first match. The teams meet next at the Hnry Stadium in Wellington on Saturday.
Match Preparations
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Tickner said the team wants to score more runs and put India under pressure with the ball. In the first ODI, Tickner scored 34 runs off 23 balls coming in at number 11, hitting four sixes and a four. Rain later reduced India's target to 143 runs, which the visitors chased down easily. Tickner hopes the Wellington pitch will offer extra bounce and movement for the bowlers compared to Eden Park. The squad is also adjusting its death bowling plans to suit the shorter square boundaries at the Wellington venue.
Team Changes
New Zealand will play without opener Devon Conway for the rest of the series. Conway suffered a concussion after colliding with fast bowler Matt Henry during fielding practice. Nick Kelly has joined the squad as Conway's replacement from the New Zealand A setup. Meanwhile, Matt Henry has recovered from his concussion and is available for selection in Wellington.
Personal Life And Future
Away from the game, Tickner spoke about his wife Sarah completing her treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in August 2026 after her diagnosis in May 2024. He said the experience changed his perspective and he now tries to enjoy cricket and play with a smile on his face while prioritizing his family. Commenting on the upcoming IPL mini-auction in December, Tickner stated he is not distracted by it and remains happy playing for New Zealand.
Context
ODI cricket series often feature quick turnarounds, forcing teams to adapt rapidly to different venue conditions and pitch behaviors across cities. Squad depth becomes vital when key players face injuries, allowing reserve players like Nick Kelly to step in at the international level.
