Director Sundar C blends traditional Tamil cinema deity tropes with Hollywood superhero imagery in the Deepavali release Mookuthi Amman 2, starring Nayanthara as a policewoman named Anandhi who discovers she is the titular goddess. The film attempts a modernised approach by giving the goddess a superhero-esque playbook, featuring action sequences where the deity's weapon and shields mirror items from Marvel and DC films like Thor and Doctor Strange.

Review and Plot

Anandhi spends the first half of the film investigating nightmares about a previous birth before discovering her divine identity, while the second half features comedy from Yogi Babu alongside flashbacks and a final showdown. Regena Cassandrra plays the villain Bhaira alongside partner Duniya Vijay, with Bhaira receiving more emotional backstory and emotional heft than the protagonist. Creator Madhu noted that traditional amman films traditionally represent female rage for women audiences, but the film blends the devotee and deity into Anandhi without fully exploring that anger.

Context

The amman padam sub-genre grew out of South Indian devotional cinema popularized by filmmakers like Rama Narayanan, AP Nagarajan, and Kodi Ramakrishna before RJ Balaji revived it with a comedy spin in 2020.
