Police in Assam’s Sribhumi district expelled 28 Bangladeshi nationals caught staying illegally, chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday. Sarma posted the update on X, saying the state will not compromise on Assam’s security and identity. He added that the patience with infiltration is over and the mission will continue with unwavering determination. The operation took place near the integrated checkpost in Sribhumi and the land customs station at Mankachar. Earlier, Sarma had pledged an infiltration‑free Assam. The Border Security Force has stepped up patrols along the 1,885‑km Indo‑Bangladesh border in the Northeast after the 2024 disturbances in Bangladesh. Assam Police also kept a high alert along the international border to stop illegal entry. The expulsions were carried out under high‑alert conditions, with police monitoring the border closely to intercept any further illegal entries. Officials said the move sends a clear signal that illegal crossings will face swift action.

Context

Assam has long faced concerns over cross‑border migration, a topic that influences its politics and identity debates. The long 1,885‑km border with Bangladesh makes monitoring difficult, prompting both the BSF and state police to maintain heightened vigilance. Such operations aim to prevent demographic changes that the state government says could affect local culture.
