Ten out of 11 stations on the Kochi metro's Pink Line will feature entry and exit points on both sides of the road.

Station Details and Progress

The 11.20-kilometer Kakkanad extension, known as the Pink Line, has completed 50% of its viaduct work, and track laying is set to start soon. The terminal station located at Smart City will provide entry and exit solely on the right-hand side, and a foot overbridge is planned to help the public reach the station. Structural work for the entry and exit at Chittettukara is finished on both sides of the road, while the left side is done at KINFRA Park and the right side is finished at Vazhakkala with architectural work already underway. Left-side structural work at Civil Station Junction and Cochin SEZ is planned for completion by the first week of December. Foundation work is finished for the Chembumukku station after land acquisition delays, and work will now pick up speed on both sides.

Hurdles and Next Steps

Metro sources noted that delays in starting right-side entry and exit work at Palarivattom Junction and Padamugal happened due to land acquisition issues, but the needed land plots will be acquired by the end of December. Work on most stations will speed up because pre-fabricated structures are ready at the casting yard and will be brought in by lorries. This phase will be followed by architectural tasks, track laying, and setting up signals, telecommunication tools, lifts, and escalators to meet the revised August 2027 deadline.

Context

Large urban transit projects often face initial delays due to the complex process of acquiring land parcels from private owners. Pre-fabricated building methods help speed up assembly once the land and basic structures are ready.
