Reported by Harshdeep Singh (Fact-Checker) · The Hindu - National ·
Kochi police are working to issue a lookout circular against a 41-year-old doctor who faces charges of sexual assault. Investigators launched a wider search for Dr. Johnson Varghese after finding phone videos that allegedly show him abusing at least twelve women.
Investigation Details
The complainant, a 50-year-old woman, handed the doctor's phone to the police. Sources stated that the doctor allegedly abused the woman after giving her intoxicants. A senior city police officer confirmed that authorities started procedures to block the accused from leaving the country.
Connected Arrests
The Infopark police registered the case against Dr. Varghese on Friday. This came a day after the Kadavanthra police arrested three people, including two film actors and an accomplice, for allegedly assaulting and robbing the doctor of valuables worth 3.25 lakh rupees after a call to an apartment in Kochi for emergency medical care. The hospital in Kochi where the doctor worked dismissed him from service right after police filed the sexual abuse case.
Context
Lookout circulars are commonly used by law enforcement agencies to track individuals and prevent suspects from fleeing across national borders during active criminal investigations. Police investigations into digital evidence retrieved from seized devices often uncover additional victims in cases involving digital recordings of crimes.
