The Swearing-In
Sankalp Amonkar took his oath as a Goa cabinet minister on Saturday following the death of former agriculture minister Ravi Naik. Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju administered the oath of office and secrecy at Raj Bhavan while Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and other ministers looked on.
Background
Amonkar won his Mormugao seat in 2022 as a Congress candidate by defeating three-term BJP incumbent Milind Naik. Later that year, he joined the BJP alongside seven other Congress legislators in a defection led by figures such as Digambar Kamat and Michael Lobo. He becomes the twelfth minister in the present cabinet and the third former Congress defector to secure a ministerial post under Sawant.
Reactions
Insisting his appointment is not too late despite elections arriving early next year, Amonkar expressed gratitude to state and national party leaders. He pointed out that the administration managed to build a bridge in sixty-five days to argue that ample time remains to serve the public. Chief Minister Sawant congratulated his new colleague and voiced confidence that the addition will aid regional development.
Context
Cabinet expansions and ministerial changes close to election dates are common political strategies used by ruling parties to balance internal ambitions and secure local support. In coastal states like Goa, legislative coalitions and party switches frequently reshape political alignments between poll cycles.
