Junior residents and interns at Osmania General Hospital in Hyderabad will now work a maximum of 48 hours per week under a new directive issued to protect their mental health and clinical efficiency.
Roster Details
The hospital Superintendent ordered all heads of departments to change their duty rosters right away to meet these new rules. The updated schedule sets up two 12-hour shifts and four other working days with a limit of six hours for each period. Staff members must also get one full day off every week with no work interruptions.
Oversight Rules
Heads of departments must check and approve the new monthly duty lists themselves and send them to the Medical Superintendent by the 28th day of each month. Units must also keep close track of attendance using designated faculty members.
Context
Long working hours for young medical trainees have been a major point of discussion in healthcare systems for years. Limiting hours helps prevent burnout and keeps patients safe by ensuring doctors are well-rested.
