Auditorium roof under construction collapses at Kanjiramkulam school
Reported by Tanvi Pillai (Section Editor) · The Hindu - National ·
A roof under construction at the auditorium of PKS Higher Secondary School in Kanjiramkulam collapsed on Saturday morning. The school is an aided institution near Neyyattinkara in Thiruvananthapuram district. The collapse happened while workers were replacing the existing roofing sheet with a new concrete roof. Work had started on a portion of the large auditorium early that morning, but the roof gave way shortly after. Because it was a non‑working day, no students were inside the building. The laborers also escaped unharmed as they had moved to another part of the site. Officials from the General Education Department said the likely cause was the failure of wooden supporting beams, which may have buckled under the new load. They have ordered a detailed inspection to determine whether any construction defects contributed to the accident. No injuries were reported.
Context
Replacing a roof with concrete often requires temporary supports. Wooden beams are commonly used for such support but can fail if not properly sized or secured. Accidents like this prompt authorities to check compliance with building codes.
