Apple makes large profits on storage upgrades for the iPhone 18 Pro, charging buyers much more than the actual cost of the memory parts.

Storage Costs And Prices

The 1TB model costs buyers $600 more than the base 256GB version. Apple spends about $192 on those extra flash memory parts. This gives the company an estimated gross profit of $408 on that upgrade alone. For the top 2.0TB option, buyers pay an extra $1,200 over the 1TB model. The extra parts cost Apple around $450, leaving a profit of $750. In India, buyers pay ₹25,000 extra to move from 256GB to 512GB. Moving from 512GB to 1TB costs another ₹50,000, and the 2.0TB model costs an extra ₹75,000 over the 1TB variant.

Generation Changes

Component costs have risen since the iPhone 17 Pro. The 1TB upgrade parts for the older model cost about $42, compared to $192 now. Even with higher part costs, Apple kept its profit high. On the 512GB model, the part cost went up from $15 to $66, which cut into Apple's profit for that size. Across generations, Apple once charged a markup of about 1,000% on storage costs, but that percentage has dropped for the new phones.

Context

High storage pricing is a common business model for smartphone makers, who use higher memory tiers to boost overall profit margins. Apple recently reported record revenue in India with strong iPhone and Mac sales for the quarter ending in September.
