The Election Commission of India stated that a meeting request from two hundred forty opposition parliamentarians violated established protocols. This development followed a protest march directed at Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, which was halted midway by authorities. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, party workers, and about three hundred opposition MPs participated in the march.

Detention And Demands

Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and their Congress colleagues were later detained Tuesday night from Akashvani Bhavan after staging a dharna lasting nearly eight hours. The opposition parties are demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Kumar, pointing to worries over transparency and the Special Intensive Revision exercise. Meanwhile, the DMK criticized Rahul Gandhi during the Delhi protest, questioning his silence on deletions in Tamil Nadu.

Commission Protocol

The poll body stated that no political party had sought an appointment through proper channels before four o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Around that time, the commission learned through the Delhi Police deputy commissioner that a delegation wanted to submit a memorandum at the Parliament House Annexe. The ECI rejected this venue as unusual, noting that official meetings occur strictly on commission premises. Officials offered to send their senior-most duty officer to the venue to collect the memorandum, but the MPs declined this offer.

Ruling Party Reaction

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party shared the commission statement on social media, asserting that the panel exposed false claims made by the opposition leader. The party stated that Rahul Gandhi falsely accused the Chief Election Commissioner of making solo decisions, whereas all three election commissioners maintain that decisions are made collectively.

Context

Election bodies follow strict administrative procedures for handling political delegations to maintain institutional order and security during high-stakes disputes. Such friction between political opposition groups and independent constitutional authorities often arises during intense electoral roll revisions and parliamentary sessions.
