Microsoft and Nvidia have launched a new class of Windows laptops powered by the RTX Spark chipset to compete directly with Apple's MacBook Pros. The devices debuted at a San Francisco event on Wednesday, featuring the new Surface Laptop Ultra alongside hardware from Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and MSI.
Launch and Pricing
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang took the stage alongside Windows head Pavan Davuluri to reveal the hardware. Huang noted that the project took over four thousand engineering years to unify the capabilities of a gaming laptop, workstation, and supercomputer into a single superchip. The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 for a 15-inch model, while the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box for developers is priced at $5,999. According to The Verge, a fully kitted Asus ProArt P16 with a 20-core chip and 128GB of unified memory reaches $6,999.99. All these new machines will ship next Friday, October 16.
Performance and Features
Davuluri demonstrated the Surface Laptop Ultra running GitHub Copilot and Gears of War: E-Day at sixty frames per second. Microsoft promised performance up to 2.1 times faster time to first token, 4.3 times faster image generation, and 6.2 times faster video generation compared to Apple's M5 Pro chip in the MacBook Pro. The laptop also includes a magnetic USB-C charging port called Magnetic Connect. Furthermore, an updated Windows 11 brings new quick actions to the Search menu and introduces hybrid intelligence, allowing Copilot to use local models alongside cloud models to save user tokens. The operating system will also support local AI agents such as Hermes Agent, OpenClaw, Perplexity, and Facebook Muse.
Context
This collaboration marks a major push by traditional PC giants to capture the growing market for local artificial intelligence computing among creators and developers. By moving demanding workloads from the cloud to local hardware, manufacturers aim to offer faster processing and better data privacy for advanced applications.
ExplainerWhy this matters
What Happened
Microsoft and Nvidia introduced the RTX Spark chipset to power a new category of high-end Windows laptops designed to run heavy artificial intelligence tasks locally rather than relying entirely on cloud servers.
Why It Matters
Running AI models locally on a device rather than in the cloud significantly reduces latency, saves cloud processing tokens, and improves data privacy for professionals. By unifying workstation-level power into a standard laptop architecture, Microsoft and Nvidia are attempting to break Apple's dominance in the creative and developer professional laptop market.
What Happens Next
The first wave of laptops from Microsoft, Asus, Dell, Lenovo, HP, and MSI will launch on October 16. Industry watchers will monitor how these machines perform in real-world creative workflows and whether developers embrace local AI agent hosting on the new Windows 11 platform.
