Onion Prices Double in Local Markets While Subsidized Stock Fails to Arrive

Onion prices have doubled in local markets, climbing from thirty rupees in June to over sixty rupees per kilogram, while government-subsidized stocks meant for the district have not yet arrived.
Market Prices And Shortage
There are several rythu bazars in the district, including those in Vizianagaram, S. Kota, Kotarubilli, Cheepurupalli, Rajam, and Bhogapuram, where over five thousand people buy vegetables and daily essentials every day. While the government provides onions at thirty-five rupees per kilogram through these bazars, the district has missed out on this benefit. Onions currently cost sixty rupees inside rythu bazars, while good-quality bulbs sell for up to seventy rupees in outside markets. Local crops suffered damage due to recent cyclone floods, driving up market demand. Traders are using this situation to create artificial shortages and push prices higher.
Distribution Problems
Officials planned to bring in onions from Nashik, expecting around four hundred and fifty bags, but the shipment was sent to Visakhapatnam instead. Agricultural market committees operate in areas such as Rajam, Bobbili, Cheepurupalli, Merakamudidam, Vizianagaram, Pusapatirega, Kothavalasa, and Gajapathinagaram, which could distribute subsidized onions to help people and control private market prices. Officials state that major cities in the state received allocations first, but onions will soon be sent to the district. Authorities have proposed a requirement of fifty-seven tonnes for the first phase and are making arrangements to bring in quality stock.
Context
Essential food items like onions often see sharp price spikes when bad weather and floods damage local harvests. Government intervention through subsidized sales aims to protect everyday consumers from sudden cost burdens, though logistical delays can sometimes slow down supply deliveries to smaller districts.
