Indian cricketer Tilak Varma has opened up about the mental and technical challenges of constantly changing his batting position for the national team. Varma highlighted his standout performance during the Asian Games gold medal match against Pakistan, where he smashed 51 runs off just 22 balls.

Batting Challenges

Varma admitted that moving down the order has been difficult. While shifting between opening and number three or four is manageable, dropping down to number six or seven is much harder. However, he accepts these changes as part of the team's needs and has put in hard work during practice sessions to adapt.

Facing the Yorkers

When batting in the lower middle-order, Varma explained that the ball comes slower compared to the top order, where it hits the seam and comes on faster. To handle the yorkers that bowlers frequently use in the final overs, he has focused on staying still and hitting the ball cleanly.

Preferred Position

Despite his flexibility, Varma stated that he prefers batting in the top order, specifically at number three. He began his career as an opener, batted at number three during the Under-19 World Cup, and later played at number four in the Indian Premier League. He remains ready to open the innings again if the team management asks him to do so.

Context

Modern limited-overs cricket often requires batsmen to be flexible and fill different roles depending on match situations and team combinations. Players frequently have to adjust their mindset and technique when moving between the top order and the lower middle-order during a series.
