India has stated it will work alongside all nations to achieve fair climate goals at the upcoming COP31 summit in Antalya, Turkiye. Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared this stance after attending the Pre-COP31 negotiations that wrapped up in Nadi, Fiji on Thursday.
Key Meetings
During the Fiji meetings, Yadav spoke at a plenary session focusing on political landing zones. He stressed that any push for higher climate goals must include financial support, technology sharing, and help for developing nations to build their capabilities, while also respecting local development paths. On the sidelines, Yadav met with Tuvalu's Minister for Home Affairs, Climate Change and Environment, Maina Vakafua Talia, to discuss green energy and sustainable coastal work. He also sat down with Australia's Climate Change and Energy Minister, Chris Bowen, who serves as the COP31 President of Negotiations, to talk over priority items for the next summit.
Real Action
Earlier on Wednesday, Yadav told the plenary session that true success at COP31 depends on actual work on the ground instead of fresh targets or empty declarations. He called for closing current gaps in climate steps, keeping existing promises, and speeding up the rollout of the Paris Agreement. Yadav led the full Indian team at these talks, which were jointly hosted by Australia, Fiji, and Tuvalu.
Context
Pre-COP meetings are key preparatory gatherings held ahead of the main United Nations climate summits to help nations iron out differences. These discussions let countries hash out major policy hurdles early so the main yearly conference can run more smoothly and reach formal agreements.
