Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for a global system to stop cross-border cyber fraud and deepfake threats. Speaking on Thursday at the 10th India Mobile Congress in New Delhi, Modi stated that digital crimes do not respect national boundaries. He appealed to governments, tech companies, telecom operators, and banks to work together to protect users from online scams.

Global Action Needed

Modi explained that a criminal in one country can target a victim in another with help from a third country. The rise of deepfakes has added a new layer of risk to this problem. He asked the GSMA and global telecom firms to help build a tool that can catch and block fraud before it reaches regular customers.

Digital Governance and DBT

During his address, Modi also spoke about India's digital governance system and mobile-linked banking for Direct Benefit Transfers. He noted that nearly ₹50 lakh crore has been transferred directly to people through the system. According to official figures, this setup has stopped ₹5 lakh crore from slipping into wrong hands and prevented leakages. Modi added that India has moved from only consuming technology to creating its own designs and intellectual property.

Context

Digital public infrastructure and mobile-linked direct transfers have become major parts of India's welfare delivery system in recent years. As financial transactions and government services increasingly move online, securing digital networks against cross-border fraud has become a key policy focus for governments worldwide.
