Pilot Project Details
Indian energy major Tata Power is joining forces with Norwegian firm Ocean Sun to trial a distinct thin-membrane solar setup on a water body in Maharashtra. The project will feature a 300kWp capacity installation located at the Mulshi water reservoir. Partners in the venture will judge how well the system works, holds up over time, and compares in cost to older methods under local weather and operational situations. The deal was formalized during the India-European Free Trade Association Prosperity Summit, reflecting deeper green energy ties between India and Norway.
Technology and Testing
Unlike standard floating solar setups that rely on connected plastic pontoons to hold up panels, this design places solar units directly onto a flexible waterproof sheet floating right on top of the water. The companies hope this layout will cut down on extra building materials and make shipping and assembly much easier. Sitting right above the water surface may also cool the panels down naturally, which can help them produce more electricity. Tata Power will measure output, setup time, repair needs, and overall money matters to see if the design works well on a larger scale.
Market Scale and Background
According to national research figures, India has over 102 gigawatts of estimated potential for solar panels on water bodies, which helps save land space normally used for ground arrays. The Union Cabinet recently cleared a large spending package worth 50.7 billion rupees to back five gigawatts of water-based solar paired with battery storage. Tata Power currently handles over 26 gigawatts of total power generation, with a major share coming from clean energy sources.
Context
Water-based solar installations are becoming a popular choice for countries seeking to expand renewable power without using up scarce land. Placing solar panels over large reservoirs can also help lower water loss through evaporation during hot summer months.
