Senior BJP leader Suresh Kashyap and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav have criticised the Congress party for questioning the Election Commission and blaming constitutional bodies for its electoral defeats. Kashyap stated that Congress accepts the election process when it wins but raises questions on the poll panel after losing, noting that democracy requires respecting the public mandate. Kashyap pointed out that during the May 2026 municipal elections in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP won in Mandi, Dharamshala, and Solan, while Congress won in Palampur. He added that local body and district council elections also saw Congress-supported candidates lose even in areas where ballot papers were used. Dr. Yadav similarly questioned why Congress does not trust the poll process in states where it loses while pointing to its wins in places like Kerala. Addressing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, Kashyap defended the verification process as essential for fair elections. He stated that Congress should present evidence to the Election Commission if it has objections regarding eligible voters instead of spreading confusion. Dr. Yadav also urged Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi to focus on organisational weaknesses and leadership issues rather than blaming the Election Commission for continuous poll losses.
Context
Special Intensive Revision of voter lists and disputes over electoral processes are common political flashpoints in India between ruling parties and the opposition. National political figures frequently debate the credibility of constitutional institutions following electoral outcomes across different states.
