UPDATE - follow-up to Ten of 11 stations on Kochi metro's Pink Line to have entry/exit from both sides of road: About 70 percent of the viaduct for the 11.20-kilometer Kakkanad extension of the Kochi metro, known as the Pink Line, is complete. Track laying is set to begin soon, and pending works across all 11 stations are gathering momentum after an initial slowdown. Officials set a revised deadline of August 2027 to finish the corridor.

Station Details

Ten of the 11 stations will feature entry and exit access from both sides of the road. The sole exception is the terminal station at Smart City, which will have entry and exit only on the right-hand side, alongside a planned foot overbridge for public access. Structural work is already finished on both sides of the Chittetukara station, the left side of KINFRA Park, and the right side of Vazhakkala where architectural work has started. Civil Station Junction and Cochin SEZ will finish their left-side structural work by the first week of December, while Chembumukku has completed its foundation stage after overcoming land hurdles.

Challenges Ahead

Metro officials stated that land acquisition delays slowed down work on the right-side entry and exit at Palarivattom Junction and Padamugal stations. Those required plots will be acquired by the end of December. Meanwhile, pre-fabricated structures are ready at the casting yard to be moved by lorries for installation, which will be followed by tracks, signals, telecommunication gear, lifts, and escalators. The full list of stations runs from Palarivattom Junction through Alinchuvadu, Chembumukku, Vazhakkala, Padamugal, Civil Station Junction, Cochin SEZ, Chittettukara, KINFRA Park, and Infopark, ending at Smart City.

Context

Urban metro extensions often face initial delays due to land acquisition challenges before moving quickly into the structural installation phase. Pre-fabricated parts allow transit authorities to speed up construction once site clearances are secured.
