Reported by Harshdeep Singh (Fact-Checker) · BBC News ·
The Crash
More than 30 vehicles crashed on the M20 in Kent late on Saturday. Police report that the collision happened at around 18:41 on the London-bound carriageway between junctions eight and nine near Hollingbourne and Maidstone.
Injuries and Rescue
Paramedics cared for 11 people at the scene and two people were taken to hospital with serious injuries. Kent Fire and Rescue Service sent an air ambulance crew, three fire engines, and a technical rescue unit to help. One of the seriously injured people went to a local hospital and the other was taken to a hospital in London. Other drivers suffered minor injuries. National Highways confirmed that thick fog was present at the scene.
Road Closures
Authorities shut the road in both directions early on Sunday for recovery and clean-up work. Police have asked anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact them.
Context
Major multi-vehicle highway crashes in low-visibility conditions often lead to extended road closures while emergency services clear debris and investigate the cause. Highways agencies frequently keep routes shut for many hours to ensure safe vehicle recovery and roadway inspection.
