Air strikes in Yemen have left at least 33 people dead, according to media linked to the Houthi movement. The attack on Saturday hit several buildings in al-Shariyah, a town east of the capital, Sanaa. Women and young children are among the dead, and Saba news agency reported that 39 people were injured. Live video from Houthi-run Al Masirah television showed rescuers pulling bodies from the rubble and carrying injured people on stretchers to a nearby hospital. Saudi Arabia, which leads a coalition fighting the Houthis, has not commented on the attack.

Background

Major fighting has resumed in Yemen after a multi-year truce fell apart following tensions involving Iran. The conflict involves a Saudi-led coalition backing Yemen's internationally recognised government against the Tehran-backed Houthis. The United Nations reports that more than 1,600 people have been killed and over 300,000 displaced since fighting started up again.

Context

The conflict in Yemen represents one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, driven by regional rivalries and internal political division. While the Saudi-led coalition frequently carries out aerial bombardments, the Houthis routinely target infrastructure inside Saudi Arabia with missiles and drones.
