Six people died and at least fifteen others sustained injuries when a gunman launched a sudden shooting attack inside a historic market square in Krakow, Poland, on Saturday.

The Attack and Suspect

The perpetrator drove a vehicle onto the landmark Main Market Square and began firing randomly at people while wearing military-style clothing. Police officials stated that the attacker used a semi-automatic rifle resembling an American AR-15 firearm. Two police officers suffered injuries while attempting to stop the man before they shot, wounded, and detained him for hospital treatment. Authorities identified the suspect as a Polish citizen born in the year 2002. Polish Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski noted that the shooter appeared to harbor extreme ultra-nationalist views and a strong fascination with far-right ideologies, with multiple weapons recovered directly from his car.

Casualties and Reactions

Among the deceased was a British national, alongside five foreign citizens who received hospital treatment for their injuries. Police chief Marek Boron confirmed that two of the killed individuals remained unidentified. Following the incident, police searched the suspect's residence and discovered three deceased relatives, consisting of two women and one man, whom Prime Minister Donald Tusk described as likely members of the immediate family. Prime Minister Tusk condemned the tragedy as an act of terrorism and announced a two-day period of national mourning across Poland. British Prime Minister Andy Burnham shared a public message expressing deep shock over the violent event.

Context

Public mass shootings are extremely rare in Poland, making this event one of the most severe episodes of gun violence in the nation's modern history. Krakow stands as the second-largest city in the country, serving as a major cultural and tourist hub located roughly 250 kilometres from the capital city of Warsaw.
