Right-Wing Activists Disrupt Deepavali Event in Seattle
Reported by Kavya Rao (Senior Writer) · The Hindu - International ·
Conservative activists led by Jake Lang disrupted a Deepavali celebration at the Seattle Center Armoury on November 7, carrying offensive placards and flags in front of a live dance stage. Mr. Lang and fellow activist Thomas Allen displayed American flags alongside hateful signs targeting Indian immigrants and the Hindu community during the cultural gathering. Security officials escorted the demonstrators out of the venue soon after the incident began. The affected event formed part of the Seattle Center Festal series, a collection of twenty-five free cultural festivals that attract about four hundred thousand visitors every year.
Reactions And Warnings
U.S. Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal called the incident vile and racist, stating that community members should feel safe during holiday gatherings. Former White House advisor Ajay Jain Bhutoria also condemned the actions, noting that targeting Indian immigrants with racial slurs has no place in the country. Several groups including the Coalition of Hindus of North America and HinduPACT urged community members to stay alert, citing announcements by the same activists to disrupt other festivities. Sunita Vishwanath, co-founder of Hindus for Human Rights, drew parallels to religious intolerance elsewhere, while Washington Governor Bob Ferguson highlighted the strong contributions of the local Indian American population.
Context
Public cultural festivals in large American cities often draw diverse crowds and occasional protests by extremist groups seeking visibility. Such incidents frequently spark widespread political condemnation and renewed calls for community protection and inclusivity.
