Persistent finger pain or thumb stiffness might seem like simple tiredness after a long day of typing or chores, but doctors warn it can point to arthritis.

Early Warning Signs

Dr Ashish Phadnis, an orthopaedic surgeon at Jupiter Hospital in Thane, notes that initial symptoms include pain, swelling, tenderness, and morning stiffness around the finger joints or thumb base. A slight ache can grow into sharp discomfort when a person grips objects, opens jars, or makes a fist. While normal morning stiffness fades quickly, stiffness lasting over an hour points to inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and needs a specialist check. Other early red flags are reduced flexibility, a grinding feeling during finger movement, visible swelling, and shifts in finger alignment.

Daily Impact

Hand arthritis slowly ruins fine motor control and grip strength. Simple daily tasks like buttoning a shirt, writing, holding a cup, turning a key, or using a mobile phone turn uncomfortable. People also struggle to chop vegetables, open bottles, or carry shopping bags. Unlike hip or knee arthritis that stops people from walking or standing, hand issues directly target hand coordination and grip.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Osteoarthritis typically strikes the fingertips, middle finger joints, and the thumb base. Rheumatoid arthritis attacks matching joints in both hands symmetrically, bringing severe pain and long morning stiffness. Dr Phadnis advises seeing an orthopaedic expert if symptoms last more than a few weeks. Catching the condition early lets doctors figure out the exact type of arthritis and start treatment before permanent joint damage or loss of function sets in.

Context

Arthritis is a common joint disorder that affects millions of people as they age, causing wear and tear on cartilage or triggering immune system attacks on joint linings. Medical guidance consistently emphasizes early detection because timely lifestyle changes and treatments can slow down joint deterioration and preserve daily independence.
