Carney says US trade war 'will come at a cost' as Canada strikes back on tariffs

Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on nearly $20 billion of US products, with levies as high as 50%, in response to the US trade war. Prime Minister Mark Carney said the counter-tariffs are necessary to protect Canadian workers. The tariffs apply to a range of goods, including steel, furniture, and cotton T-shirts. The US trade representative, Jamieson Greer, warned that Washington may impose tit-for-tat tariffs on Canada as early as Tuesday. President Donald Trump has threatened to halt all US business with Canada-based airplane maker Bombardier unless it moves its manufacturing south. The aerospace giant contributes over $7 billion to Canada's annual GDP in 2024. Carney emphasized that his country's main focus is to diversify its trade relationships and build its economy. He also pledged to support workers affected by the ongoing trade war with the US 'for as long as it takes'. The two countries have been locked in a trade dispute since negotiations collapsed in late August.
