A blood pressure reading of 140/88 mmHg is not normal, according to a leading cardiologist. Dr Aseem Dhall, Director and Head of Cardiac Sciences at ISIC Multispeciality Hospital, explains that the upper number of 140 is more concerning because it hits the threshold for Stage 2 hypertension. The lower number of 88 is also above the ideal level. However, a single high reading does not automatically mean someone has high blood pressure.

Proper Measurement

Dr Dhall advises sitting quietly for at least five minutes before checking your pressure again. For an accurate measurement, keep your feet flat on the floor and your arm supported at heart level. It is best to take two readings about one minute apart and record them. Several everyday factors can temporarily raise these numbers, including caffeine, smoking, alcohol, recent exercise, emotional stress, poor sleep, and being unwell. Nervousness during the check, talking, sitting incorrectly, or having a full bladder can also alter the result. Avoid caffeine, smoking, and exercise for at least 30 minutes before measuring.

Next Steps

If blood pressure regularly stays around 140/88, it should not be ignored. A doctor will look at factors like weight, diet, physical activity, diabetes, cholesterol, kidney health, and family history before deciding on treatment. Lifestyle changes such as reducing salt, staying active, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco are important. Age alone does not make this reading normal. In younger adults, it can point to early hypertension, while in older adults, doctors must balance treatment against risks like dizziness or falls. For comparison, a reading above 180/120 mmHg with concerning symptoms requires urgent medical attention.

Context

Blood pressure is measured using two values representing the pressure when the heart beats and when it rests between beats. Monitoring readings over time helps doctors spot consistent patterns rather than reacting to one isolated check. Consulting a qualified medical professional is essential before starting any health routine or making major changes.
