UPDATE - follow-up to Bypoll results LIVE: Vote counting to begin shortly for five Assembly seats, one Lok Sabha constituency: Vote counting began at 8 a.m. for bypolls held across five Assembly seats in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Puducherry, along with one Lok Sabha constituency in Assam.
West Bengal And Tamil Nadu Contests
In West Bengal, the Nandigram and Rejinagar Assembly bypolls recorded turnouts of 80.89 percent and 80.08 percent respectively. The results will test the political mood after the BJP replaced the TMC in power, with Nandigram having registered a multi-cornered contest and Rejinagar seeing a high-profile arrest of AJUP chief Humayun Kabir. In Tamil Nadu, Madurantakam recorded 86.26 percent voter turnout and Dharapuram polled 80.30 percent under a three-tier security cover. These two seats are viewed as a test of popularity for the TVK, which came to power in May, while the opposition AIADMK seeks to reclaim them.
Puducherry And Assam
Counting is also underway for Puducherry's Thattanchavady Assembly segment, where heavy police security was deployed at the Motilal Nehru Government Polytechnic college. In Assam, about 76 percent of nearly 19.05 lakh electors voted for the Nagaon Lok Sabha constituency, a bypoll necessitated after Pradyut Bordoloi resigned to win the Dispur Assembly seat on a BJP ticket.
Context
By-elections serve as immediate barometers of public sentiment between major legislative elections, often reflecting local shifts in voter loyalty. The simultaneous counting across different states highlights the logistical scale overseen by the Election Commission of India.
