The Noida International Airport in Uttar Pradesh has been officially renamed Narendra Modi International Airport. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced the new name for the greenfield aviation project located in Jewar within the Gautam Buddha Nagar district.

Project Details

Yamuna International Airport Private Limited developed the facility through a public-private partnership with state authorities. This company operates as a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG. The design of the airport brings together Swiss operational engineering and Indian architectural influences. It serves as a secondary commercial hub for the National Capital Region alongside Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. The first phase features a single runway and a passenger terminal built to handle up to 12 million passengers each year. Future expansions aim to grow this capacity to 70 million passengers annually by the year 2050. The initial phase was inaugurated on March 28, and commercial flights started in June. The second phase of the project is targeted to open in 2031 or 2032.

Context

Large infrastructure projects like this greenfield airport are built to handle growing air travel demand and reduce heavy traffic at older city airports. Public-private partnerships allow state governments to bring in private sector money and expert engineering skills to complete large construction jobs.
