Project Details
According to Indian Express, the greenfield aviation project in Gautam Buddha Nagar district was built to function as an additional commercial center for the National Capital Region alongside Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport. Developed through a public-private partnership between Yamuna International Airport Private Limited and state authorities, the facility was inaugurated in March, with commercial operations starting in June. Its initial phase features a single runway and a passenger terminal designed to handle up to 12 million travelers each year.
Context
Major infrastructure projects of this scale are often developed through public-private partnerships to share financial costs and operational expertise between government bodies and private firms. Naming large public facilities after national leaders is a common practice in India to honor their role in bringing major developmental projects to fruition.
