Psychologist warns teen depression differs from normal mood swings

Depression, not just a passing mood swing, is emerging as a major mental‑health issue for Indian teenagers, paediatric psychologist Shreya Singhal told Hindustan Times Lifestyle. She explained that normal adolescent mood changes are brief, tied to a clear trigger such as a fight or a bad test, and the teen usually recovers quickly. In contrast, depression persists for two weeks or more and shows up most days with low mood, irritability, hopelessness or withdrawal. Singhal listed the extra warning signs: loss of interest in favourite activities, disturbed sleep or appetite, poor concentration, falling grades, constant fatigue, harsh self‑criticism and pulling away from friends and family. She added that teens often express depression through anger, irritability or frequent outbursts rather than crying, and may complain of headaches or stomachaches. The psychologist urged parents to stay curious instead of dismissing the signs as “just a phase.” She recommended listening without trying to fix everything and asking open‑ended questions like “You seem low lately; what’s been going on?” Tracking changes over weeks helps spot a pattern. If symptoms worsen, interfere with school, relationships or daily routine, Singhal said parents should seek a paediatrician or mental‑health professional. Any mention of self‑harm or suicidal thoughts requires immediate professional help. Early recognition, she stressed, can greatly improve a teen’s chances of recovery.
Context
Adolescent depression often looks different from adult depression, showing more irritability and physical complaints. Recognising sustained changes rather than isolated symptoms helps parents intervene early.
