Navanethem Navi Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her work promoting peace and international law. Early in her legal career during South Africa's apartheid era, Pillay worked on cases involving anti-apartheid activists and political prisoners.

Legal Career

Her career connects to the period of the 1963-64 Rivonia Trial, which ended with Nelson Mandela and seven other activists receiving life sentences for sabotage and efforts to overthrow the government. In 1973, Pillay took up a case against the officer commanding Robben Island Prison, successfully fighting for the rights and privileges of political prisoners held there while Mandela was serving his sentence. She also served on a defence team in a 1971-72 trial under the Terrorism Act to expose unlawful and torturous interrogation methods.

Context

The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the highest international honors, awarded annually to individuals who have done the most to advance peace. Pillay's background reflects decades of legal defense work during South Africa's historical transition away from apartheid rule.
