Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay won the Nobel Peace Prize on Friday, October 9, 2026, for her work to promote peace and international law. The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised the 85-year-old South African jurist of Indian origin for holding states and leaders accountable and bringing hope to victims of conflict.
Background
Justice Pillay was born on September 23, 1941, in apartheid-era South Africa to parents of Tamil descent. Her father was a bus driver and her mother raised their eight children despite financial hardship. She earned her BA and LLB degrees from the University of Natal, and later received a Master of Law and a doctorate from Harvard University. In 1967, she became the first woman to start a law practice in Natal and the first non-white woman to serve on South Africa's High Court.
Career and Legal Work
Her early career involved defending anti-apartheid activists and prisoners' rights. In 1973, she helped secure legal counsel and basic amenities for political prisoners on Robben Island. She later served on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and was appointed as a judge on the International Criminal Court in the Hague. She also served a six-year term as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014, and currently serves as a judge on the International Court of Justice in the case accusing Myanmar of genocide.
Further Achievements
Justice Pillay chaired the UN Human Rights Council's Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which concluded in September 2025 that Israel committed genocide in Gaza, a report Israel dismissed as scandalous. She also contributed to South Africa's gender equality efforts as a member of the Women's National Coalition, helping include a non-discrimination clause in the country's constitution. In 1992, she co-founded Equality Now with Jessica Neuwirth and Feryal Gharahi to advance women's legal rights. The Nobel Peace Prize carries a value of about $1.2 million and will be presented in Oslo on December 10.
Context
The Nobel Peace Prize is one of the world's most prestigious international awards, presented annually in Norway to individuals or groups who have done the most to advance peace, human rights, and international cooperation. Justice Pillay's decades-long career spans major global human rights institutions, tribunals, and landmark constitutional reform efforts.
