UPDATE - follow-up to Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay: 5 facts about 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner: South African jurist and former International Criminal Court judge Navanethem 'Navi' Pillay has won the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize for her work to promote peace and international law.
Background
Born on September 23, 1941, in apartheid-era South Africa to Tamil-descent parents, Justice Pillay grew up facing severe racial segregation. Her father worked multiple jobs as a bus driver to support their eight children, while her mother managed the household. Despite financial struggles, her parents ensured all their daughters and sons received an education. Justice Pillay earned her BA and LLB from the University of Natal, later completing a Master of Law and a doctorate at Harvard University. In 1967, she broke barriers by becoming the first woman to open a law practice in Natal, and later became the first non-white woman to serve on South Africa's High Court.
Legal Career
Throughout her career, Justice Pillay has held states and national leaders accountable while fighting for human rights. In 1973, she successfully fought for political prisoners on Robben Island to receive legal counsel and basic amenities. She served as a judge on the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda before her 2003 appointment to the International Criminal Court in Hague, where she served until August 2008. She then completed a six-year term as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014. Currently, she serves as a judge on the International Court of Justice in a genocide case against Myanmar and previously chaired the UN inquiry commission that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza, a finding Israel dismissed as scandalous.
Equality Work
Justice Pillay has also campaigned extensively for women, children, and victims of domestic violence. As part of the Women's National Coalition, she helped secure constitutional protections against discrimination based on race, religion, sex, or sexual orientation in South Africa. In 1992, she co-founded Equality Now alongside Jessica Neuwirth and Feryal Gharahi to challenge discriminatory laws and advance legal rights for women globally.
Context
The Nobel Peace Prize is traditionally presented in Oslo on December 10, bringing international recognition to individuals who dedicate their lives to resolving conflicts and upholding justice. Justice Pillay's decades-long judicial career highlights the critical role international courts play in holding powerful nations and leaders accountable for human rights violations.
