Actor Imran Khan and over four hundred other people were taken into custody by local law enforcement officers on Saturday at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai.

What Happened

Imran arrived at the proposed protest site alongside his girlfriend Lekha Washington and his cousin Zayn Marie Khan to support a call made by CJP. While sitting in a police transport vehicle, Zayn shared a photograph with a slogan while Imran flashed a peace sign. Lekha posted updates on social media explaining that officers prevented them from booking any transport to leave the area after their release. She later confirmed that all three individuals were safe and heading back to their residence. During a media interaction prior to his detention, Imran stated that he attended as a regular resident to question why public movement and free speech were facing restrictions, adding that he belonged to no group and acted purely as an individual.

Context

August Kranti Maidan is a historic site in Mumbai associated with the Indian independence movement, but modern public gatherings require official clearance from authorities. Police officials stated that no paperwork was filed beforehand and that high court rules restrict such assemblies to Azad Maidan.
