Imran Khan and Lekha Washington arrested during Mumbai solidarity protest

Imran Khan and his partner, actress Lekha Washington, were taken into police custody on Saturday as Mumbai protests erupted. The couple appeared in a police vehicle, and Washington posted a short Instagram clip from inside, telling followers the group was being moved, that she would share their location pin and that she was unsure of their destination. The demonstration was organized to echo similar rallies in Delhi and was associated with the Cockroach Janata Party, which is pressing for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Protesters had planned to assemble at August Kranti Maidan, a site linked to the historic Quit India Movement, among other points. Police said they had deployed officers to stop gatherings that breached current restrictions, resulting in several arrests, including the actors.

Context

The incident reflects ongoing tensions between activist groups demanding accountability from election officials and authorities enforcing crowd‑control rules during politically charged events.
