The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board has fined 10 industries in Visakhapatnam a total of 16.33 crore rupees for breaking environmental rules and pollution standards. Air quality in the city worsened sharply in December 2025, with 25 out of 30 daily AQI readings falling into poor or very poor categories and an average daily AQI of 255. From December 18 to 31, every daily reading stayed at 265 or higher, peaking at 347 on December 19.
Action And Inspections
Task force teams inspected several manufacturing units in January 2026 and issued notices after finding deficiencies. When air quality failed to improve despite repeated checks, the Board imposed financial penalties. Data covering September 2025 to September 2026 show that air quality crossed national standards on 259 out of 382 days. All 10 monitoring stations breached the annual PM10 limit over 12 months, with station averages ranging from 84 to 135 micrograms per cubic metre against the standard of 60.
Terrain And Weather
M. Sree Ranjani, Joint Chief Environmental Scientist at the Board, stated that the city has a bowl-shaped terrain that traps pollutants and keeps heavy dust close to the ground. During winter, a temperature inversion traps cooler air and smoke near the surface. Board Chairman P. Krishnaiah noted that authorities have set up three new continuous monitoring stations and proposed five IoT sensor-based units to track local emissions in real time.
Context
Industrial cities often experience severe air quality dips during winter months when stagnant weather conditions prevent smoke and dust from dispersing into the upper atmosphere. Pollution control boards use environmental compensation fines to penalize heavy emitters and push them to fix faulty pollution control equipment.
