Science & EnvironmentVisakhapatnam Fined 10 Industries Over Pollution as Air Quality Crosses National Limits

The Andhra Pradesh Pollution Control Board has fined ten industries in Visakhapatnam a total of 16.33 crore rupees for breaking pollution rules. Air quality worsened sharply in December 2025, with twenty-five of thirty daily readings falling into poor or very poor categories.

Winter and Terrain

Data covering September 2025 to September 2026 shows air quality crossed national standards on 259 of 382 days. Joint Chief Environmental Scientist M. Sree Ranjani stated that the city's bowl-shaped landform stops pollutants from spreading. Winter temperature inversion traps these particles near the ground, pushing up the air quality index.

Pollution Levels

All ten monitoring stations breached the annual PM10 limit of 60 micrograms per cubic metre over 12 months, with station averages ranging from 84 to 135. Five of seven stations also exceeded the annual PM2.5 limit of 40. Sulphur dioxide and ammonia levels stayed below annual standards everywhere.

Action and Studies

APPCB Chairman P. Krishnaiah noted that the board uses eight manual stations and three new continuous monitoring units, with five sensor-based stations planned for November. The board awaits a final source apportionment study from Andhra University to measure the exact shares of industry, vehicles, and road dust.

Context

Cities with bowl-shaped landforms and heavy industrial activity often struggle with trapped winter smog because cold air sinks and blocks warm, polluted air from rising. Regulatory bodies use fines and expanded sensor networks to track emissions more closely and push local polluters to clean up their operations.
