Poverty drove a grieving couple in Odisha's Nabarangpur district to mortgage their ration card for five thousand rupees to hire a private ambulance and take their dead newborn baby back to their village. Ten-day-old son of Nakul Botra and Ambika from Dolaiguda village in Papadahandi block fell sick and was first taken to a local hospital, which referred him to the district headquarters hospital. On the fifth of this month, doctors sent the infant to the Saheed Laxman Nayak Hospital in Koraput for treatment, where the baby passed away. Because the hospital lacked ambulances and the parents had run out of cash, they had no other option left. They handed over their white ration card to an individual in exchange for five thousand rupees to pay for a private vehicle home. Meanwhile, in a separate administrative development in the same state, IAS officer Anya Das was transferred as the new collector of Nabarangpur by the Odisha government on October 7, 2026, before she could even take charge, following political friction with ruling party leaders due to a past dispute during her stint as DRDA project director.

Context

Incidents of poor families struggling to afford basic transport for dead bodies highlight major gaps in public healthcare and mortuary support systems in rural parts of the country. Government hospitals are generally expected to provide free hearse or ambulance services to help grieving families transport deceased patients back to their homes. Administrative reshuffles involving district collectors often reflect complex political dynamics and pressure from local leaders regarding past run-ins with officials.
