On World Mental Health Day, the India Mental Health Alliance reaffirms its commitment to placing lived experience at the center of mental healthcare practice, service design, and policy across the country. The alliance operates as a cross-sectoral network comprising 400 organizations spread across 30 Indian states.

Network Reach And Impact

Founded as a Section 8 not-for-profit organization in late 2023 through a partnership between Vasvi and Ashish Bharat Ram, Amaha Health, and Children First, the network brings together stakeholders from health, gender, livelihood, climate, and education sectors. Over the past two years, the alliance has engaged with 3,380 mental health professionals across more than 135 cities to build collective capacity and share knowledge. Dr. Kavita Arora, a child and adolescent psychiatrist and founding cohort member, states that combining clinical expertise with lived and practice-based knowledge is essential for building an equitable and responsive mental health ecosystem.

New Book Launch

To amplify lived experience as expertise, the alliance is presenting India's first anthology of lived-experience narratives by 11 women leaders. Titled 'Homecoming: Mental Health Journeys of Resilience, Healing & Wholeness', the book features first-person accounts of women in urban India dealing with depression, complex PTSD, suicide loss, intergenerational trauma, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. The organization is also building a collaborative knowledge hub to make practitioner insights, field lessons, and academic research easily accessible.

Context

World Mental Health Day is observed globally every year on October 10th to raise awareness and mobilize support for mental health issues. Integrating personal experiences of patients into medical frameworks helps make treatment plans more relatable and effective within local cultural contexts.
