An executive magistrate in Delhi ordered the release of Cockroach Janta Party convener Abhijeet Dipke and co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka nearly 24 hours after police detained them. The court set one specific condition for their release, stating they cannot breach the peace for a full year.

The Airport Detentions

All three leaders were detained from inside an airplane just minutes after landing in Delhi. Airport officials moved their flight to a remote bay after the Airside Operations Control Centre asked air traffic control to redirect it. Police and Central Industrial Security Force personnel were already waiting at the bay when the aircraft arrived. Visuals of the trio smiling, talking, and waving to cameras surfaced on Sunday morning after they left court.

Wider Crackdown

The detentions followed a massive police crackdown across Delhi where about 7,000 people were detained during an attempted protest demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar. While most detainees were freed on Saturday, the CJP leadership and YouTuber Dhruv Rathee were held until early Sunday. Despite the police clampdown, the pressure group announced that their agitation will continue.

Family Tragedy

Meanwhile, Abhijeet Dipke's 85-year-old paternal grandmother, Savitribai Dipke, died on Saturday at the family home in Maharashtra's Hingoli district. She had been suffering from age-related ailments and passed away hours after her grandson was detained. The family remained uncertain whether he would reach home in time for her last rites.

Context

Mass detentions are a standard police measure used during high-security public protests and political clampdowns to maintain public order in the capital. Courts frequently impose a bond or a legal condition to keep the peace when releasing individuals detained under preventive laws. This case highlights how political protests can intersect with sudden personal emergencies for those involved in public demonstrations.
