Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay have inaugurated the Poonamallee to Vadapalani stretch, which is the first part of the Chennai Metro Rail Phase Two project, on Sunday, October 11, 2026. The leaders also took a train ride together during the visit. Ticket fares for this new metro stretch will remain unchanged, with a trip from Poonamallee to Vadapalani costing forty rupees, and the Metropolitan Transport Corporation will run last-mile connectivity buses along the route.

Public Event And Projects

Later in the afternoon at a public function at the Kendriya Vidyalaya Ground, Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for various development projects worth over thirteen thousand crore rupees in Chennai. These projects cover sectors such as metro rail, highways, railways, ports, petroleum, and scientific research. During the event, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay stated that when the state and centre work together, it benefits the people, and added that they are seeking to establish a corruption-free government in Tamil Nadu.

Campus Visit

Earlier during his daylong visit, the Prime Minister held a roadshow from Porur to the Indian Institute of Technology Madras campus. He offered prayers at the Jalakandeshwarar Temple inside the campus and visited the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at the institute.

Context

Major transit projects rely on coordination between state governments and the central government to secure funding, clearances, and multi-sector development support.
