Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay spent the weekend meeting top national figures from opposing political sides, hosting Rahul Gandhi for lunch on Saturday before spending Sunday alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi at public and temple events.
Metro Project Launch
Modi and Vijay inaugurated the initial route of a rapid transit network in western Chennai on Sunday morning, waving green flags and riding the train together from Porur Bypass to Poonamallee. The newly opened 14.64-kilometer section forms part of a massive urban transit undertaking costing forty-nine billion rupees and includes eleven operational stations alongside a double-decker stretch. This transit opening formed a smaller part of a broader infrastructure package exceeding one hundred thirty billion rupees, which also covered national highways, railway upgrades, port facilities, and a brain research center at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
Temple Visit And Demands
Following the transit launch, Vijay accompanied Modi to the Jalakandeshwarar Temple on the technology institute campus for prayers, going beyond standard official protocol. During the public event there, supporters of the Chief Minister blew party whistles and displayed banners pointing to higher political ambitions, while Congress allies expressed discomfort. Addressing the gathering, Vijay emphasized the importance of cooperative governance between state and federal administrations and urged approval for several pending regional infrastructure initiatives, including subsequent phases of the local transit system, highway corridors, and river-linking plans.
Context
Regional leaders in India frequently need to balance state governance needs with national party alliances, particularly when managing federal funding and infrastructure approvals. Tamil Nadu has a long history of state administrations working alongside central governments led by different political parties to secure local economic development projects.
