Erosion Survey

District Magistrate Alankrita Pandey visited the erosion-affected area near Mahadevpur Ghat in Raghopur block of Bhagalpur district on Saturday to check ongoing rescue and protection work. Sub-divisional officer of Naugachhia along with other administrative and police officers joined the inspection to review preparations against potential dangers.

Ground Situation

The DM stated that the erosion rate in Raghopur remains steady with no major changes since Saturday night, and checks confirmed no underground soil washing out so far. However, according to Jagran, severe erosion has created a grim situation across Raghopur panchayat, forcing residents of Palalpur, Shankarpur, and Nankar villages to flee with their families and belongings to safe spots.

Administration Action

Locals alleged that timely boats and effective rescue arrangements could have reduced the disaster. Police and administrative officials are now making public announcements asking villagers to move out, while officials speed up protection work and next-phase preparations. The rapid flow of the river near the railway embankment poses a major challenge for local safety.

Context

Rivers like the Ganga often shift paths and erode banks during high water flows, threatening nearby homes and infrastructure. Local administrations use inspection visits and protective works to try and stabilize vulnerable riverbanks and safeguard populations living nearby.
