Khosla Ventures is opening its first-ever office outside Sand Hill Road, a move that marks a significant shift for the venture capital firm. The new outpost, located on 14th Street in New York, is expected to open this fall and will house a handful of Khosla investors, including Keith Rabois. The office will feature an executive briefing center, where the firm will bring 10 or 12 portfolio companies to meet with Fortune 500 companies four days a week. This feature is designed to provide portfolio companies with pilots and customers, creating a vibrant office environment. The announcement comes months after Rabois relocated to the East Coast to be closer to his husband and children. Rabois believes that New York has the density of talent that the Bay Area once had, but notes that senior technical talent is a challenge. He attributes this to geography and lifestyle, where in-office cultures can be difficult for senior executives to maintain. To address this, Khosla Ventures has adopted a strategy of building from the bottom up, opting out of hiring senior people. This approach has worked for Ramp, a fintech company backed by Khosla Ventures, which has successfully tapped into right-out-of-school graduates. The move puts Khosla Ventures in a small but growing club of major Bay Area venture firms with a presence in New York.
