OpenAI's feud with mathematicians is only escalating

Twenty-five leading mathematicians have signed an open letter expressing their concerns about the impact of AI labs on their intellectual work. The mathematicians, all of whom have been awarded the Fields Medal, the most prestigious prize in mathematics, argue that the rush to solve famous math problems using AI models threatens the community's ability to understand and communicate these solutions. The signatories claim that the secrecy surrounding AI-conceived ideas and the lack of attribution and plagiarism safeguards pose severe challenges to the integrity of mathematical research. The letter follows the Leiden Declaration, released by a working group of mathematicians in June, which offers recommendations for mathematicians, institutions, and policymakers to address these issues. The mathematicians also highlight the importance of preserving the intellectual super-structure that nourishes students, finds new questions and ideas, and integrates them into broader human civilization. The open letter is a call to action to ensure that the benefits of AI in mathematics are not lost in the process of innovation.
