What Happened

Delhi Police on October 11, 2026 released a 1.45‑minute video in which Deputy Commissioner Neha Yadav showed officers informing Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) founder Abhijeet Dipke of his grandmother’s death. The officers conveyed the news, offered water, and asked repeatedly if he wanted to speak to his parents or another family member. They proposed arranging a flight or bus to the funeral and offered to connect him via an official phone number. Dipke declined the travel offer, saying “I will stay here,” and also refused the phone connection. The video noted that the funeral was scheduled for the next day.

Reaction

Dipke had earlier alleged that police delayed his release, preventing him from attending the funeral. He claimed the released footage omitted the part where he asked for his phone to retrieve his cousin’s number and for a chance to speak to his lawyers. He said police arrived at 3:30 a.m. with arrest papers, insisted he sign them, and only allowed him to see a lawyer after he refused. Dipke, along with CJP members Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, had been detained on October 10 ahead of a planned Jantar Mantar sit‑in against the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, a protest for which permission was denied.

Context

The police denial of permission stems from a July 2026 CJP protest that turned violent, involving stone‑pelting, arson and damage to public property. Authorities cite that past non‑compliance and the current security climate justify restricting the upcoming demonstration.
