A new platform named Young at Heart, or YaH, has been launched in Thiruvananthapuram to help senior citizens and people in their 50s connect, make new friends, and enjoy life. The initiative was started by five women entrepreneurs and working professionals who noticed how their parents became isolated and listless after retirement. A formal launch event with music and entertainment is scheduled in the capital on October 16.
Activities
YaH plans to organise regular recreational and entertainment events tailored to the hobbies and interests of its members. The group also focuses on diet, physical fitness, digital literacy, and financial planning. Actor Manju Pillai, who is leading the initiative alongside Dimple Mohan, Devi Mohan, Sankari Unnithan, and Maya Menon, notes that registered members have shared various personal goals, such as learning to speak English fluently, designing dresses, and traveling. Future plans include involving younger volunteers to take seniors to the movies, the beach, or simply play chess.
Context
Older adults often face loneliness and isolation as age-related changes reduce their opportunities to socialise. Initiatives that bring together people of similar age groups can support emotional well-being and mental health by encouraging active community engagement.
