Oil prices slipped on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Ukraine and Russia agreed to halt attacks on each other's energy infrastructure following a U.S. diesel-supply deal with Moscow. Brent crude futures fell 11 cents to $104.61 a barrel, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate fell 49 cents to $91.36 a barrel.

Supply Deals

President Trump stated that Russia will supply more than 300,000 metric tons of diesel to U.S. and global markets immediately, with another 500,000 tons coming in November and a further 1 million tons right after. ICE gasoil futures dropped 3% to $1,436 per metric ton. The International Energy Agency forecasts global daily diesel consumption at close to 29 million barrels. IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol urged members to assess if extra diesel releases are needed.

Market Reactions

Tim Waterer, chief analyst at KCM Trade, noted that the announcements eased immediate supply pressure, though questions remain over whether the ceasefire will hold. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs raised its December Brent crude forecast to $90 a barrel from $85, estimating a risk premium of over $20 a barrel. In the Gulf of Mexico, energy majors Shell, Chevron, and BP worked to restore production following Hurricane Isaias.

Context

Geopolitical tensions in West Asia continue to influence global energy markets and keep risk premiums elevated. Disruptions to shipping routes and production facilities frequently cause sudden price shifts in crude oil. Energy markets balance short-term supply agreements against ongoing regional conflicts and weather-related disruptions.

ExplainerWhy this matters

What Happened

Crude oil prices fell after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, alongside new Russian diesel supply deals, even as ongoing conflicts in West Asia and hurricane disruptions in the Gulf of Mexico kept markets volatile.

Why It Matters

Energy prices directly affect the cost of fuel, transport, and manufactured goods worldwide. Ceasefires involving major oil and gas producers like Russia can lower costs for consumers, but persistent instability in shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz and regional wars create sudden price spikes and economic uncertainty.

What Happens Next

Observers will monitor whether the Russia-Ukraine energy ceasefire holds in practice and if promised diesel shipments actually reach global markets. Markets will also watch how quickly Gulf of Mexico energy platforms resume full output and whether West Asia tensions lead to further supply disruptions.
