West Indies players Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford received official warnings on Monday for breaking cricket rules during their second Twenty20 match against India in Ranchi last Friday.

Penalties And Infractions

Both cricketers also received one demerit point each on their records. This is their first such penalty in a two-year period. Powell broke a rule about damaging cricket gear after he hit the ball away with his bat following his dismissal in the sixth over. Rutherford broke a rule about arguing with umpire calls when he shouted at the official in the 13th over because a ball he thought was wide was called legal. Both players agreed to the penalties set by match referee Prakash Bhatt, so no formal hearings were needed.

Match Context

During that same game, West Indies beat India by six wickets to chase down a big target. Team captain Shai Hope scored 102 runs with six fours and nine sixes, while Rutherford supported him with 84 runs using seven fours and seven sixes. India had earlier reduced West Indies to 58 for three wickets, but Hope and Rutherford built a 120-run partnership to win the match. Romario Shepherd also added 34 runs from 13 balls. India later won the third match in Indore by 14 runs to take a two to one lead in the five-match series.

Context

Demerit points given by cricket authorities stay on a player's record for two4 months and can lead to match bans if too many accumulate. Match referees handle these disciplinary issues to keep the game fair and ensure players respect umpires and equipment.
