Feeling off without knowing why is a common experience, according to psychologist Dr Rituparna Ghosh. Many people visit a clinic saying they are fine, but add that they do not feel like themselves anymore.

Signs And Surveys

Some individuals do not feel sad at all, but rather feel blank, disconnected, or mentally exhausted. Mental health concerns are common in the country, yet people often stay confused because these issues do not always look the way people expect. The National Mental Health Survey of India from 2015 to 2016 found that about 11 percent of adults experienced a mental disorder needing active intervention, while the treatment gap for common mental disorders sat at roughly 85 percent.

Behavioural Shifts

People often look for a clear reason for distress, such as a major loss, a difficult situation, or obvious sadness. However, the mind does not always express distress clearly, and it sometimes shows up in behaviour before a person can put it into words. Many people ask why they feel bad when nothing obvious has happened, yet work, family, and other tasks continue as usual. Individuals keep going and slowly start to treat this inner change as normal. Dr Ghosh noted that while not every bad mood means something alarming, changes that continue for weeks need attention because they eventually affect relationships, work, sleep, and everyday life.

Context

Recognizing mental health concerns early can prevent long-term impacts on daily routines and personal well-being. Healthcare professionals emphasize that acknowledging emotional shifts is an important part of seeking proper support.
